How to Share Your Faith in a Secular World Without Being Weird

As Christians, we know we are called to share our faith with those around us, and yet, with each passing day, our beliefs become more foreign to an increasingly secular world.

Sharing the Gospel will inevitably bring rejection, mocking, and hardship as the message of Christ challenges the world’s values and confronts hearts resistant to truth.
As the Apostle Paul reminds us, “For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” (1 Corinthians 1:18).

Still, at times, we are rejected not because of the substance of the Gospel, but because we are weird.

Our words make no sense, our timing is off, and our approach is strange. While we will never remove the cost of sharing our faith, we can apply some Biblical principles to our approach to help us communicate the Gospel more effectively without being weird.

Consider three practical ideas for sharing your faith in the secular world without being weird, or at least less weird.

1. Live Out Your Beliefs:

The core of the Gospel is that every person falls short of God’s standards and always will. The solution is not to be morally perfect but to accept our inability to fix ourselves and place our trust in what Jesus did on the cross for us.

But that does not mean God is indifferent to how we live our lives. The Bible is filled with injunctions to deal with sin ruthlessly. To the watching world, the disconnect between what Christians say and how they live is a significant barrier, hindering their openness to hearing about Jesus.

One way to avoid looking weird when we say, “Jesus is powerful and can change your life!” is to demonstrate the power of that reality in your life!

Our lives should demonstrate the transformative power living inside of us. Our attitudes and actions are not the gospel, but there is power in a life that shows the gospel and then speaks it.

2. Build Genuine Relationships:

Building genuine relationships means stepping beyond isolation and intentionally engaging with people in their real-world contexts. Like Jesus and Paul, we must meet people where they are, understand their culture, and communicate in ways that resonate, not relying on outdated "Christianese."

In a world suffering from deep loneliness, authentic friendships become a powerful bridge for the gospel. People are more open to truth when they feel truly known and loved. This isn’t about forced evangelistic efforts—it’s about real connection, real community, and real conversations that reflect the heart of Jesus.

3. Use Everyday Language:

At a high school event with hundreds of unreached students, I watched as long sermons, Bible verse discussions, and “Christianese” filled the stage. As I sat there, I thought, If I weren’t a Christian, I’d be long gone. The organizers meant well, but their words weren’t connecting with the audience.

When it was my turn to speak, I knew I had to communicate differently—using language that made sense to secular students. That night reinforced a crucial lesson: words matter, and if we want people outside the church to hear the gospel, we must speak in a way they understand.

Ultimately, sharing your faith without being weird comes down to authenticity and wisdom. Live in a way that reflects the power of the gospel, ensuring your actions align with your words. Build genuine relationships, engaging with people where they are, not where you wish they were.

Avoid outdated Christianese and speak in ways that resonate with a secular world. While rejection is inevitable, let it be because of the gospel itself—not because we are disconnected, confusing, or unrelatable. The goal isn’t to make the message more comfortable but to remove unnecessary barriers so people can see Jesus for who He truly is.
