Living as a Christian in a Secular Workplace: 3 Practical Tips
by
Ben Pierce
Everyone wants to be accepted and liked. This is especially true in a place where you will spend a significant amount of your time and energy: at work.
At the same time, you are a Christian, which means you hold certain values and beliefs that are not exactly water cooler-safe.
The two most popular responses to this dilemma are ‘fight’ and ‘flight.’ Either we arm ourselves with sound arguments and step into the ring like a boxer ready to dodge and deliver blows. The more common response is flight. We can reason, “It might just be best to stay low and keep my thoughts private.”
We compartmentalize our work life and religious beliefs, figuring this is a more harmonious way to conduct ourselves in a pluralistic context. But if our faith is the most important thing about us, can we live such fractionated lives?
I believe it is possible to find a third way. We can be loving and bold. Courageous and compassionate. We can be our whole selves without alienating our colleagues and living in constant tension with those around us.
Let me offer three essential principles for embracing this middle ground between anger and avoidance.
Cultivate Authentic Relationships:
Being a Christian means caring about people, not as projects, but as image-bearing sons or daughters of God. In light of this, caring about those around you is a good place to start.
In a world dominated by selfishness and loneliness, followers of Jesus should be experts at cultivating authentic relationships. We should be the most loving and self-sacrificing.
Start there and watch the doors blow open.
Start Deep Conversations:
Your colleagues are more spiritually open than ever, yet skeptical of organized religion. This creates an opportunity for genuine conversations about faith—if we approach them with understanding, not arguments.
Starting spiritual conversations isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about asking great questions and truly listening. Instead of leading with assumptions, we should meet people where they are, recognizing that their hunger for meaning, justice, and beauty all point to God.
Whether through casual chats at work or deeper discussions in focus groups, people are ready to talk about faith. The key is to drop the religious jargon, engage with honesty, and let the Holy Spirit do the rest.
Show Them Who Jesus Is:
Most unbelievers reject a false version of Jesus, shaped by media, bad experiences, or ignorance. Before telling people about him, we must show them who he really is by living out hope, resilience, transformation, and mercy. People have no interest in a powerless, joyless faith—our lives should reflect the joy and security of knowing God. When we endure suffering with unshakable resilience, forgive the unforgivable, and love radically, we display a strength the world cannot explain.
The world sees plenty of moral stands but not enough mercy. Jesus first went after the heart, and behavior followed. He didn’t ignore sin, but he led with grace, and we must do the same. The secular world must see that God isn’t distant or angry but the source of beauty, creativity, and joy. Our lives should make people curious about Jesus before we ever speak his name. If we live this way, people won’t just hear the gospel—they’ll see it.
Living as a Christian at work means balancing boldness and love—being true to your faith without alienating others. Instead of arguing or staying silent, build real relationships, ask deep questions, and show Jesus through your life.
Let your hope, resilience, and mercy speak louder than words, making faith a visible, compelling truth. Lead with grace, not just moral stands, and let your life spark curiosity about Christ.
